    Genere e Carriera Scientifica. Il caso ITC-irst,
    `Genere e ricerca scientifica e tecnologica` è una questione divenuta di attualità con l`acuirsi del problema della carenza di ricercatori nelle discipline scientifiche e di specialisti nel settore delle nuove tecnologie, dall`informatica alla genetica. Questo problema è sentito soprattutto in USA e in Europa ed ha rinforzato l`interesse su studi e iniziative volte a favorire le pari opportunità in questi settori. L`obiettivo è quello di recuperare quelle risorse umane che attualmente incontrano le scienze e le tecnologie in fase di formazione, ma poi ne rimangono ai margini. Lo studio presentato in questo documento si propone di analizzare alcuni dati sul personale della ricerca in ITC-irst, un istituto per la ricerca scientifica e tecnologica con sede Trento, nel periodo compreso tra il 1990 e il 1999. Questa analisi è volta a inquadrare la situazione locale rispetto a quella nazionale ed internazionale, relativamente ad aspetti connessi con la specificità del genere nell`ambito della carriera scientifica.,

    Generating Multilingual Personalized Descriptions of Museum Exhibits - The M-PIRO Project,
    This paper provides an overall presentation of the M-PIRO project. M-PIRO is developing technology that will allow museums to generate automatically textual or spoken descriptions of exhibits for collections available over the Web or in virtual reality environments. The descriptions are generated in several languages from information in a language-independent database and small fragments of text, and they can be tailored according to the backgrounds of the users, their ages, and their previous interaction with the system. An authoring tool allows museum curators to update the system's database and to control the language and content of the resulting descriptions. Although the project is still in progress, a Web-based demonstrator that supports English, Greek and Italian is already available, and it is used throughout the paper to highlight the capabilities of the emerging technology,

    The art experience: meeting tourist needs and design visions,
    The design of entertainment and edutainment systems is a compelling and challenging adventure. Such systems are not intended to help users perform work tasks and, most of the time, they cannot be brought back to clearly stated user requirements: their ultimate mission is to engage the user and to stimulate learning. The nature of these kinds of systems imposes a mediation between designers’ visions and user needs. In the following sections we describe the design process adopted to develop an electronic tourist guide that transforms the user experience from one of simple consultation (commonly achieved with audio guides, multimedia kiosks, CD ROMs or even books) to an immersion in a rich information environment. This work was driven by an ambitious vision: to minimise the boundary between the physical space and the related information using the movement of the visitor as mediator. The tourist guide assumes the role of a travelling companion that tells stories about what the visitor looks at, without requiring any explicit intervention for accessing information. From this vision we developed, within a three years project named HIPS (Hyper Interaction within Physical Space) funded by the European Commission in the I3 Programme, two prototypes: an outdoor prototype and an indoor installation in the Museo Civico in Siena, Italy. The project finished in October 2000 and the system is currently maintained in laboratory. The technology we used allowed multiple information structures to be overlaid on the physical world in a non-intrusive fashion, opening up new possibilities for creative design. This experience demonstrates that the success of entertainment or edutainment systems, especially those exploiting advanced technologies, strongly relies on a design philosophy that mediates between a deep and continuous focus on the users and innovative visions,

    This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the personalization topic in the wide context of developing a web based application, with a special focus on issues related to e-commerce applications in the field of tourism. Personalization is the process of tailoring a web site to individual users' characteristics or preferences. Service providers are personalizing users' web experience because they want to offer an enhanced one-to-one solution for each single user request. This paper illustrates how the user experience is influenced and the major technologies that, behind the scene, enable personalization. Personalization effects and technologies are illustrated by referring to real world examples, extracted both from commercial products and prototypes developed in research laboratories. A longer discussion will concern a research project that the authors are involved in, which is devoted to the development of a recommendation system for destination selection and travel products bundling,
