Smart Interfaces

The focus of this strand of activities is on developing intelligent interfaces, from ambient intelligence to tangible computing by means of personalized and adaptive systems. The most promising directions for the next future include automatic analysis for influence behaviour (from local context and from activities in social networks) and the design and development of a general backend service for adaptive composition of information.

Projects

ECOMODE (Event-Driven Compressive Vision for Multimodal Interaction with Mobile Devices) is a project funded by the European Commission (H2020) that aims at designing and implementing touch-less mobile devices usable also by older adults and visually impaired people. By exploiting the recently matured biologically-inspired technique of event-driven compressive sensing (EDC) of audio-visual information, interaction with ECOMODE technology is based on mid-air gestures and vision-assisted speech recognition.

Main activities

Public display systems are an encouraging technology for public and semi-public spaces. Since 2010, i3 has devoted part of its research to investigating how people engage with digital displays in public spaces and to designing novel interfaces and interaction techniques.
